This week we planned and wrote down something about the content of three pages: The “Big Picture” page, the “Data” page, and the “Analysis” page. On the “Big Picture” page, we completed the central thesis and the story we would like to tell at the first stage.During the class on Friday, we asked the professor for some feedback and planned to make our thesis and support better. For the page of “Analysis”, we discussed why we want to research the US’s crime rate and how we analyzed the data. We used the crime data in our final project mainly because we are curious about how the crime rate will reflect the stability of a society and how each economic or social factor will affect the crime rate. In the past weeks, we conducted an analysis on the crime rate itself as well as its connection with several factors that we believe will be related. For the page of “Data”, we discussed how we found the data and how we cleaned and used each table in detail. We collected the data from various sources and the main data table we used is the crime rate data we’ve found on the FBI website. We also cleaned the data from several dimensions: Cleaning the footnotes, extra rows, and combining as well as splitting the tables when doing analysis.
We brainstormed and wrote down some of our initial ideas on Google document about “Analysis” and “Data” page and planned to continue work on it in the next two weeks. In addition, we decided to make the interactive dashboard and record the introduction video in the coming week. We might do something including displaying the violent and property crime rates for each year.
In the following two weeks, we still have several works to be done. For example, the interactive dashboard and the introduction video as we’ve mentioned above. Before finalizing this project, we also need to consult our professor for suggestions.
